An Unfinished Roundabout

Thursday 2nd February 2012 | Rabi-ul-Awwal 9, 1433

THE Ziauddin roundabout in Karachi’s North Nazimabad, which has been under construction for the last six or so months, seems to have been dug for ages, and the work in progress is being carried out at a snail’s pace.
It is important to mention here that in addition to a hospital and a medical college, there are numerous schools in the vicinity of this roundabout. And, above all, it is a densely populated area. One can imagine chaos in the morning when everyone is rushing to reach schools, college and hospital on time, struggling through the jampacked road, even driving on the wrong side.
Sometimes the haste gives rise to accidents and serious squabbles between commuters. Perhaps to save time, some of the bus drivers sometimes drop students on that buzzing and congested road which is too risky to be neglected. Amid honking horns, noise and air pollution patients in and around the hospital no doubt suffer a great deal.
In the light of all this, one strongly feels the authorities concerned need to take prompt action and resolve this matter by speeding up the ongoing work at the said roundabout so that many citizens passing through this area could reach their respective destinations on time and safely. Furthermore, patients coming to the area hospital too would recover quickly.

My Fate, My Destiny……

As we move through life, the force of fate creates events that we only appreciate when we reflect on our existence. ~ Ronald Harmon

Fate is the force, principle, or power that decides events, as well as the inevitable happenings predestined by this force. Fate is a pivotal and indispensable tool that functions in our life. Fate is all what is beforehand chosen for us. There are many questions peppering our mind. Are we dependant on fate? Can we achieve whatever we want even if it’s not in our fate?? Can an underprivileged man modify his fate and develop into a thriving person? Does all hard work really work or go in vain as it is not in our fate? Is fate that much crucial?
Undeniably no one will deny the fact that our fate is written and determined by Almighty Allah. We get all those possessions which are in our fortune. Looking at your palms, have you ever pondered upon the mysteries of the criss cross lines? Are not they meaningful? Are not they determining your fate? If hard work does matter than why don’t these lines keep changing every day depending upon the struggle that we do daily and why we wonder when someone who does not deserve win out of thin air. Isn’t it because of the inevitable luck, for which we crave for?
There is a saying that: “Hard work can change our fate.” Sometimes it seems just a saying. Why don’t all of the students secure similar marks when assisted by the same mentors, when most of them burn mid night oil and solve the same paper? Why do some people curse their fate outside the examination hall for missing a question or solving it wrongly even when they know the correct way to attempt it? Luck, mere luck!!! Why doesn’t every employee seem contented at the time of increment? Aren’t the bootlicker acknowledged by the management quite often than the conscientious, relentless worker? Our success is actually revolving around our fate. The luckier we are, the more successful we will be. Undeniably, fate has an upper hand than hard work.
There are many people who will say that we should not be disappointed and keep on striving, yet the question arises, are you never disappointed on your defeat? How does it feel when all your efforts end in smoke? Don’t you cry your eyes out and wonder the cause of your failure? Let me divulge this secret, it’s all our fate and there is nothing we can do against it.
Fate matters in each and every aspect of our life. Think of a cricket or foot ball match, are not external factors of a great importance there? All the unremitting session of practice and strategies topple down when the rain pours down, or a wrong decision is taken by the umpire. Think about the time when the championship title is literally dependent upon the last penalty stroke. Is not that the fate that matters at that time?
Fate is utterly inexorable and we can't change our fate. If one tries to resist against the fate, he himself will perish in the course of this action. No matter how hard you try, fate will soon overwhelm you.

Love is Merely Madness

“There is always some madness in love," said Friedrich Nietzsche.

I know you will think of me mental if I say that love is a mental disorder, an utterly mad state. But give me a chance to justify my stance.

Let’s start with the story of love and madness. The time when the earth was not created, out of boredom, the virtues and vices had planned to play hide and seek. And guess what poor madness was adamant to count, as expected owing to his foolishness. As Madness counted, the vices and virtues went hiding. Tenderness, Treason, Fondness and Passion, all were hiding- except Love. For undecided as Love is, he could not decide where to hide. And this should not surprise us, because "Love and a red nose can't be hid."
Finally Love jumped into a rose bush where he hid.
One by one, Madness found them all - except Love. Envy told Madness where love was and in complete foolishness, Madness stabbed wildly at the rose bush with a fork. Since then Love is blind and being guilty Madness has become his guide. So, Love is blind and is always accompanied by Madness.

Convinced????????? Noooo. You donot believe myths????????

Never mind. Let me prove it scientifically.

The cover story of National Geographic magazine, cited a research that claims that people who fall in love have a chemical profile in their brains similar to that of people with a dis order, obsessive-compulsive, as noted by the author, psychologist Lauren Slater. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations, obsessions, or behaviours that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions).Doesn't it sound weird? Isn’t it craziness?

Tell me how do the people behave when they experience love? Overjoyed, excited, elated, talkative, their mind full of dreams and they weave a world- a utopia, where they see themselves dwelling happily with their lovers.  It’s interesting to tell you that these all are the primary symptoms of mania – craziness.

People in love are infamous for their unusual beliefs and, indeed, research has shown that they are inclined to hold unlikely and overly positive beliefs about their lovers. You must have heard boys bragging: She is the most beautiful girl on earth, though the person might not have seen the girls of even neighborhood, how can he claim that? Or often girls say, “You know ….. He can do anything for me,” however when the girls shyly demand them to talk to his parents about their marriage, they seem frozen. Whatsoever, I just want to draw your attention that how people exaggerate the abilities of their love and hold the delusional belief and this is simply mental disorder.

You must be amazed to know that there are people who are diagnosed with De ClĂ©rambault's Syndrome, also known as erotomania, it’s a form of paranoid delusion with an amorous quality. The patient thinks that another person is in love with him/ her, even if he or she has never ever seen that person. What do you say about that? Is there any one here with this disorder?  Surely we will have few such cases here as well.

It seems madness and love in many ways, are soul mates. You just say the word love in front of a doctor and you will find a number of diseases attached to it. Do try!!!

Love is actually an addiction as it has all the attributes of an addiction, including strong attention on a specific object, hopping around when things are going as you want and throwing tantrums when something goes wrong, the eagerness to do insane things like smiling while reading a text, blushing at some one’s name, waking up late and texting whole night and above all the strong belief that someone is very very special. In fact love makes you special, and I am sure you understand which special I am talking about.

Pedro Calderon de la Barca said, “Love that is not madness is not love.”

If you are still not convinced, I am afraid it’s the symptom of falling in Love and you need immediate treatment!!!!!”

Binge eating disorder

Have you ever felt powerless against your will to eat?
Do you keep thinking about food all the time?
Do you eat all the day long?
Do you gorge on food more when you are alone?
Do you feel relaxed after eating something, especially when you are nervous or dejected?

If you are nodding even on any one of the above mentioned questions then unfortunately you are one of the victims of vicious binge eating disorder. Basically, it is characterised by craving of food mostly after a major diet, yet some people prefer to eat the whole day sporadically. Surprisingly, they often eat without rankled by the pangs of hunger or barely feeling peckish.

Obviously, the habit of binge eating promises gain in weight, aggravating the problem, still the blindfolded victims could long for nothing but food, to alleviate their worries. For them, food is a fact, friend and family, consequently to handle any negative emotion; they would love to be in its company; digging their teeth into a big juicy beef burger or munching on a packet of crunchy potatoes chips.

Research indicates that people with such disorder encounter numerous health related issues, as it leads to obesity, which is the root cause of multitude of diseases; most prominently: heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even some types of cancer. Furthermore, overweight people with binge eating disorder often have mental ailments as well, such as: anxiety, depression and personality disorders.

Even though, Binge-eating disorder is the most common of all eating disorders, yet it is easily curable if controlled on time. Certainly, you cannot stop eating altogether; however you can develop a better relationship with food that is merely nutritional not emotional. In addition, take healthy food and eat when you feel hungry; better to have only three meals in a day. As you eat in the bout of gloominess, so find an alternate to manage stress. The best way to curtail down melancholy is exercise. It not only helps you to do away the extra weight you have put on yet, it makes you feel fresh, lighter and happy.

Moreover, lean on friends and family when you are in dire need; talk to them and seek their guidance. You can also indulge yourself in watching your favourite soap, sitcom or relish any past time activities like listening to music, painting, and playing indoor or outdoor games. In a nutshell, keep yourself busy!
Stay healthy and blessed!

Humming and Hawing About Vacations

Long awaited holidays round the corner; suddenly all our planning seemed toppling down. Will the vacations start from June or July? A question that last week gnawed everyone associated with schools. As a teacher I understand the significance of long holidays, which promise relief from a long winding session of busyness, weariness, fear, apprehensions and expectations related to studies. Starting the new session from June or extending the running session, both could create restlessness among teachers and students.

The basic issue in this regard, is the unavailability of books and copies. Until and unless we are thoroughly equipped, nothing can be planned for the whole month. It’s not the matter of keeping the school open, it’s about designing appropriate lessons to utilise the time productively. Moreover, commencing the session abruptly would ebb away students and teachers’ enthusiasm equally, as vacations is the time to recharge batteries, review past strategies, bring improvement, make a resolution for the upcoming session, muster up strength and head towards a new beginning. In addition, most of the people plan important family events or outing programmes in June or July and the arrangements like flight reservations or booking of halls are usually made before hand.

Though it’s announced now that holidays will be observed as usual yet we can never predict what’s next. Keeping the people in dilemma aggravates the problem, as these decisions should be taken either well before the onset of the session or at least in the beginning of the year. Anything changed at the eleventh hour ends up in nothing but panic and utter disappointment.
